Understanding cultural differences in Offshore Outsourcing
In a recent study by Accenture, cultural issues were cited as one of the main reasons for the problems of outsourcing deals, and over half of the National Outsourcing Association (NOA) members surveyed recently also said that the differences culture is still a problem in outsourcing deals.
Two factors that are rarely present in all projects, but can not be avoided when going offshore, are geographical distance and cultural differences.
Geographical distance may be a factor in terms of differences in the unfavorable zone time, but today most offshore service providers that work hours are adjusted to ensure that you have several hours per day match common.
However, the impact of cultural difference is something that should not be overlooked when going offshore. Depending on the location that is to sub – Cultural differences can vary from less if near the coast, for example, in Ireland or Eastern Europe to a real culture shock when at sea to low cost countries in Asia, like India or China.
So far India has been the most favored destination and offshore outsourcing remains a dominant player in this field. Service providers India have matured over the years in providing outsourcing services and are able to manage cultural differences when working with clients across different geographies. Meaningful approach, however, an area that has received so far is to educate their customers on these cultural differences. Unless customers understand these cultural differences, it is difficult for them to understand and appreciate. For example, if you're in a meeting with an Indian service provider, will account that the most senior person in the service provider's team lead the discussions and their staff only speak when your boss asks you to do so. Sub culture in business coordinates the UK can interrupt a conversation at any time if you have a valuable contribution, but if this protocol was followed in India would be considered disrespectful.
Another typical observation is that the Indians never feel comfortable saying "No", especially if you are a customer. For example, if you go to a store to buy a shirt and realize that the store is about to close, you can still walk (even after the box is closed) and the store ensure that their needs are being addressed, even if it means they have to keep the store open for another 30 minutes. In the IT project scenarios, project members do not mind compromising your family commitments just because they can not or will not say no to their customers.
Most Indians do not feel comfortable giving bad news. They believe they must give people good news when it comes to giving bad news, or very quiet or find alternative ways to communicate the bad news. This is an important aspect to understand how many customers get "surprises" about issues related to their project stage in a single afternoon and still wondering why the topic was not emphasized during the weekly review meeting.
So the key to outsourcing not only find the right projects and the right people to offer, but the ability to build within your team to work in a culturally diverse environment. Although this may sound very difficult, the solution is simple. Most of the client organization can successfully bridge cultural differences through the application of the following tips.
1. Training – Most offshore service providers have a special "Western cultural orientation" programs for members of his staff in offshore projects. These training programs that help them understand the culture of a specific country and business culture. Along similar lines, it is important for customer organizations to build a training program for its own staff to educate them about the culture of the target at sea. This can be achieved by
- Identify internal team member who has experience with both cultures. For example, an organization can have a person of Indian origin who has spent considerable time in India and then moved to his country. Usually a person who has worked in India for a couple of years and then moved to his country (and spent about 5 or 6 years there) would be the best candidate. This person would educate your team on cultural differences and can act as a lead trainer.
- Enlist the services of a specialist consultant at sea. Advisers Offshore have great experience working with different cultures and with a team of diverse cultures that can provide relevant training to members of his team. Most these offshore consultants understand the cultural differences in the different stages of outsourcing and are therefore an ideal choice for training programs
- Request that your service providers to conduct training programs specifically for your team. This could also be useful to some extent, and has its own limitations based on the provider's experience doing business in that geography in particular. Furthermore, ideally, cultural training should be conducted before starting with a vendor for the first day of the interactions, your team is able to leverage their knowledge of the business culture of the provider organization.
- As the business culture of each company is different, it is important for you to educate service providers about the culture of your company – The attitudes, thought patterns and rules of behavior. Many companies ignore this, but this is an opportunity to improve productivity and experience of ground their equipment at sea.
2. Visit offshore location – This is very useful and provides its members team a chance to experience what the offshore location is how people communicate and how they behave, work, social life, etc. However, it is possible for an organization to send his team members to the location at sea, as it would be an expensive proposition. However, different ethnic (where possible) whenever There is a requirement for someone to travel could be useful. Also make sure that people who have visited the offshore location share their experiences with colleagues and becomes part of the training program to make more use of their experience.
3. Organization of Cultural Events – As mentioned above, most offshore service providers have training programs for their staff. In addition, most service providers in events celebrating today as Valentine's Day, Independence Day (USA), Day of Halloween, Christmas, etc. to educate their teams. Along similar lines, clients can organizing events (with the help of advisers at sea, the sellers) that are important in the location at sea. This client will give the team a learning opportunity.
4. Films such as a training guide – Cinema English are seen worldwide as a result, many people around the world to educate themselves, addition to entertainment, from these films. Companies can also adopt a similar learning approach, encouraging the people who are involved with offshore projects, to see local films and documentaries (with English subtitles) in offshore locations.
The suggestions mentioned above is not one comprehensive "to do" list to close the cultural gaps, however, is a guide to help team members understand and can appreciate cultural differences to come through while working on a daily basis with the teams from the coast.
In summary, offshore projects have special issues that managers should know, and cultural diversity. The old belief that technical skills are sufficient to ensure the success of the project has proved everyone wrong field on the overall experience of multicultural teams in the offshore outsourcing environment. To ensure successful offshore project a multi-skilled the collaborative approach to bridge cultural differences is very useful. By learning from other experiences, reducing the cultural gap at an early stage can help avoid the cost in terms of cross-cultural communication failures, project delays, the conflicts in team and overall productivity.
